Mercury Stud

-- About us --

My name is Rebecca Hinson. I am 20 years old and live in Great Barr, Birmingham. I got my first pair of rats (Roger and Tom) aged 10 and have been keeping rats ever since. I currently have 36 rats as well as a dog, two cats, two rabbits and three guinea pigs. I am a member of the National Fancy Rat Society (NFRS), Midlands Rat Club (MRC), Fancy Rat Enthusiasts Club (FREC) and Yorkshire Rat Club (YRC) and I try to get to as many shows as possible. I was mentored by Estelle Sandford of Alpha Centauri Stud during my initial litters and I would like to thank her for her guidance and the wonderful rats she gave me to start me off. I gained my stud name at the NFRS Annual Cup Show & Self Show in 2007 with wins from Mercury Miranda (Russian Blue Dumbo) who won Best Opposite Age in the cup show and Best in Show in the self show. A Best Opposite Age win from Mercury Sirius (Black Dumbo) at the NFRS Clevedon show a month earlier also contributed.

-- Housing --

My rats live in a specially built extension on the side of the house, it remains cool in the summer and is warm in the winter. This is also big enough for me to store bedding and food and allows me to easily take cages out into the garden to clean them. I currently have my does housed in an explorer (one group in the top half and the other group in the bottom) and another group in a Freddy Max. My three groups of bucks live in Freddy Max’s and a Freddy 2. I use Ferplast Mary’s for mom’s and babies. I bed my rats on bexmax shavings and use shredded newspaper for nesting material. I have tried many different types of bedding and I feel this is the best combination for me as it keeps smell and mess to a minimum. In the cages are things such as hammocks, tunnels, igloos, sputniks and various hanging toys.

-- Diet --

My rats are fed on the shunamite diet, details of this diet can be found here: http://www.shunamiterats.co.uk/diet.html. As well as this I also feed things such as fresh veg, egg, fish, dog treats, etc. I try to feed a varied diet to make it more interesting.

-- Breeding --

I breed first and foremost for health and temperament, then type and colour/markings. I am currently breeding for Black, Russian Blue, Russian Blue Agouti and Russian Blue Point Siamese. I started breeding in 2005, when, after realising how much friendlier and healthier breeder rats were, wanted to carry on with this. The varities I breed are most defiantly some of my favourites.
